TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING.

Thi3 afternoon the tneotinEC of members of tho Takapuna Jockey Club took. place Qb the office of the Olub, Devonport. Mr E. W, Alison (Chairman) presided.

The report tor the year waa read as follows:—Your Committee are pleased to record tho increasing popularity of your Club, as shown by the raceiptß being £3,639 28 Bd, as against) £3,122 IBs lOd for the previous year, being an increaee of £516 4s b"d. Although an increase in the business of the Club has been made, they regreb to state that the expenditure has exceeded the receipts, and a loss of £136 17s 6d in ohe year's operations has resulted, owing bo the increase of stages made from £1,(305 5s to £2,113 15s, and the doduclion of the Government tax of 1J per cenb. from the 10 per cent. Your Committee had intended to move in the diroction of erecting better accommodation, bub, owing to an unsuccessful season, they did not proceed with tho improvements as expected. The saddling paddock has however been enlarged, and tho extension has proved to be most convenient. The want of a training track is much felb by trainers, and your Commit too recommend that tho track laid down some time oyo be put in proper working order aa soon as tho weather is suitablo, and that a foe for using samo bo chargod.

The balanco-eheob was read as follows : — Dr.: To sundry creditors, £7,695 15a; Takapuna Stakes, 1893, £'21 ; bank overdraft, £38 18s lOd ; balance, £1,533 la 4d : Total, £9,288 15a 2d. Cr.: By Racecourse proporty, buildings, etc., £8,664 10a 8d ; office furniture, £24 10a 6d; 6undiy debtors, £399 15* 9.1 ; cash in hand, £199 18s 6d : Total, £9,288 158 2d.

Profit and Loss.—Dr. : To atakoa, £2,113 15s ; ronb and interest;, £470 ; printing and advertising, £125 ss; totaligator tax, £278 15s 4d ; salaries and wagen, £315 16o; eundrios, £329 lls 4d : Total, £3,639 2s Bd. Cr. :By totalisator, £1,670 7h 8d ; nominations and acceptaacos, £833 10s; gates, bootlm, cardß, etc., £812 15s 6d ; salo of horses, mombotV subscriptions, etc., £185 12s ; btilanco, £Ki6 17s 6d ; Total, £3,639 2a Bd.

The Chairman, in moving the adoption of tho report and balance-sheet, said that tho last day's racing at tho Club's Summer Mooting was unsuccessful, owing to the action of the Metropolitan Club holding an extra race • mooting on the following Saturday, which was an infringemonb of tho racing rules. Tho Metropolitan Club ouould be an oxumplo to minor clubs, and should be consistent and praiseworthy in its actions. It was urged at tho annual meeting that the extra meeting was a epecial ono in honour of tho doparture of Lord Onelow. This yenran oxcueo may be found to enable the Club to hold a eixth meeting in contravention to the rules, that when Earl Glasgow visits Auckland a race mooting bo held to wolcome his arrival, and nexb yoar possibly some other excuso may be found. At any rate through the inconsistent action of tho A.R.C. the Takapuna Club made a serious loss on tho Summor Meeting. The extra mooting was hold so soon aftor, and horao owners could nob race with advantago at both places. He regretted to soo a desire on tho part of tho Metropolitan clubs to wipo out as many subordinate clubs as thoycan. The recent decision of tho conference ab Wellington was clear evidence of tho dosiro of the big clubs to squolch lessor onos. Ib is generally admitted nocessary to curtail the number of racomeetinps, bub novertheloss ib was necessary thoro should bo a cortain number of logitimato suburban and country moetings. These meetings should bo fostered and encouragod, us such are really foodera and tend to maintain the Metropolitan Club. The Coinmittoorecoirnißod the necessity for erecting a nevvgrand stand and conveniences at an estimated cost of £1,500, but in tho face of an unsuccessful season last year, combined with being compelled to give an additional 1-100 a day in stakes, and to pay a State tax of 1J por cent., it eeomed to be quite impossible to provide such improvements. Would it not be far better thab tho Metropolitan Clnb should decide exactly how many meetings should bo held during a racing season, and only pass the programmes which they approved, tho amount to bo given in stakes to bo dependent upon the number of moetings hold by a Club, tho added money not to exceed an anaounb the Club could profitably afford, and to insist that such profits should bo expended on improvements on courso and surroundings ?

Mr J. Maya seconded the adoption of tho report and balance-sheet and endorsed tho remarks of tho Chairman.

Mr 11. Duder did not think they ought to blama the Auckland Racing Club for tho loss on tho Summer Meeting. They Bhould not oppose the Metropolitan Club and raise strife.

The Chairman statod that tbore was nothing in his remarks but absolute truth. Ho did not think thoy should allow the Metropolitan Club to ride rough shod over them.

The following gßntlemen woro elected members of the Committee: —Messrs 11. Duder, E. W. Alison, J. Mays, F. Welle, W. H. Fenton, VV. Avonol), W. Adams, Lankhatn and A. Alison. Tho usual voto of thanks concluded the mooting.
