BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of tho Board of Education was hold to-day. Present.: Messrs Luke (Chairman), Uciy, Muir, Grant, Motion, Moat and Cooper. Technical Instruction.—The Committee appointed to report upon the draft Bill for manual and technical instruction, fubmittcd by the Minister for Education, reported as follows : — Tho Committee warmly approve of tho objects of the moasuro, and, subject to tho exceptions following, trust that tho Bill may be passed into law during tho coming session. Exceptions : — Clause 3 : Tho Committee object to tho inspectors ia technical education being empowered to visib public schools, as such would be calculated to lead to confusion and conflict. Clause __.: Tho Committee recommend that the public school teachers bo not allowed to chars;© fees for manual instruction. Clause 5 : Tlio Committee rocommo.nd thab tho words "meeting in the evening or on Saturday," be struck out. Day classos ought also to bo substitutcdf Chairman's Report. — Tho Chairman's report stated that ro.-ionations had been received from Mr D. J. Jones, head teacher, Te Kopuru ; Miss K. Calvert, teacher, Hofcco North ; Miss M. Trolhill, teacher, Greerton.

Teachers.—On the recommendation ot the Executive Committoe, it was resolved that tho following.pupil teachers bo indentured :—Kenneth O. Maclaurin, George 11. Pocock, Margaret. Christman, Florence B. Dunn, Josephine Hamilton, Jano Huoston, Gertrude Palmer; also with third year rank, Samuel H. Macky, Harold J. D. Mahon, Wm. A. Pilkington, Rachel G. Barclay, and Maud H. Burfoot. Appointments "were authorised as follows:—Mr James Graham to Huia, Mr J. Robb temporarily to Newton Easb, Mr Horace D. Harrison, probationary pupil teacher, to Whangarei. Resignation Acci_i>tf._x—Mr D. J. Jones appeared beforo the Board in defenco of the charge preferred againsb him of having falsified the attendance,registers of the Te Kopuru School. He had also sent in his resignation in writing. Mr Jones said he admibted thab an error of judgment had been coinmitbed, but he urged that there was no intention of fraud. Ho trusted bhe Board would give him the credib he claimed of freedom from moral guilt. He mentioned that when tho school Was burned down subsequent to this charge boing made, the first thing he saved was the school roll.—The Executive Committee having investigated this mabter fully, no discussion wasontered upon, and on the motion of Mr Udy it was agreed to accept Mr Jones's resignation. Bank Account.—ln response to aii inquiry made by Mr J. L. Kelly ab the previous meebing of the Board. Mr V. E. Rica (secretary) stated that tho average monbhly balance ab credib of tlio Education Board account during the three years ending March 31st, 1892, was £6,200. During the period named, there was no overdraft on this account. Between February, 1890, and March, 1891, an overdraft was obtained on thojjirls' High' School account amounting to £203 7s lOd, for which a sum of £18 5s 6d. was charged as interest ab 9 per cent. All remittances to credit of School Committees and beacher!?, as well as all. remittances from any part of the colony to bhe Board, arc forwarded by the Bank withoub any commission or exchange. The Bank keeps the school fund accounts of 194 Committee ranging from' £5 a year^ upwards at various branches throughout tho district. The secretary of the Chrisbchurch Board wired thab " no interest is allowed on daily balances '' and bhe secretary of the Wellington Board wrote,to tho samo effect.
