FIRES.

A house occupied by Mr McSheffrey and family, at Kuaotunu, was destroyed by fira on April 27th.

A four-roomed cottage occupied by Irvvin Bros., of Karaka, was burned down on April 20th. The house and f urnifcuro were insured.

A dwelling-house occupied by Mr M. J. Gannon, and situated at Mangapapu, near Gisborne, was destroyed by fire on May 11. Ib was insured in the Norch German Company for £100.

A house afc Invercargiil, occupied by Mr W. G. Fox, Collector for Southland county, has been burned down. The house was insured for £150, and the furniture for £125, both in the Royal.

On May 6bh a house owned and occupied by Mr Quiun, Sydenham, was totally destroyed by fire. The building was insured in tho Liverpool, London, and Globe for £150.; the furniture for £50. Very little was saved.

A dairy and workshop, the property of Daniel Crawford, farmer ab Clevedon, near Papakura, was burned down on May sth. The building was iusured in the North German Office for £50. A quantity of tools and dairy utensils were destroyed with the building.

Returns prepared for the Wellington City Council show thab during tbe last three years ninety fires occurred in the city in buildings valued ab £83,490. Tbe total damage was £13,403. The cost of maintaining the fire brigade during the same period was £3,571.

A fire occurred on May 2nd upon the premises of Mr W. Webber, tanner and leather dresser, situated near the Cemetery Road, Onehunga. The buildings were destroyed, bub he pits were only slightly damaged. The buildings were insurerl* for £250 in the London and Liverpool Office, and the contents in the Royal for £375. The loss is estimated fo be over £800. .

On the morning of May the 15th an iron shed, containing about one ton of dressed flax and four tons of fibre, was burned down ab Te Puke. The shed and contents were the property of Mr P. Bennett, and adjoined his flax mill. The origin of the fire is unknown. The loss is estimated ab £230. There were no insurances.
