THE SYDNEY CUP.
In reviewing the race for the Sydney Cup, "Martondale" gives eomo interesting particulars of the contest. He says: — il That it was a wise move in adding tho extra monoy was told by the fact that it attracted "25 starter?, only one less than the record for it, 26 in 1830, when Petrea won. The only absentees out of the final acceptors were Marvol, whoso win hi the Doncaater Handicap had imposed upon him ft 101b penalty, and the bottom weigh t, Emm Pasha. The race was a good one all tho way, the only horse that early in the race looked to have no possible chance being Grcygown. From the fall of the flag he was laat, and pretty well remained there for the wholo of the journey. The majority of the pacemaking was done by Bodkin, Yowi and Jack. When tho last one was headed it was in tho straight by Oxide, who, bad Egan come on from tho distance instead of looking round, would no doubt have got homo. By looking round ho gave a slight check to his mount, which allowed Stromboli to got up, and to the surprise of everyone win by a neck. After tho race for the St. Leger no one gave Stromboli a chance ; but as I all along maintained, Stromboli had done such a great amount of work, and was so well, while he was liberally treated in the way of weight, that his chance should not have been overlooked. Highborn ran well ; but very disappointing form was shown by all the other big weights. Strathmore was beaten early in the race, also G'Naroo; while Tirailleur was never prominent in any one part. As the field swept into the straight Forty Winks held a prominent position, also Yarran and Poi'tsoa. The last-named horse finished a good fourth, and it is quite possible that racing a different way to what lie is accustomed interfered with his chance. Alchemist, who when ho first arrived at Rand wick from Braidwood exhibited excellent private form, was the last to finish, thus showing that he must have gone off. That.it was a truly-run raco is shown by the time, 3min 31 sec."
