EXCITING OCCURRENCE.

Another exemplification of the dangerous state of the Quay-street broakwator was given yesterday afternoon, when tho third daily consecutive accident happened, which nearly resulted in serious loss of lito and. property. An expressman of Ponsonby, named James Preston, was proceeding with his cart along Quay-street with a largo case from McArthur and Co.'s warehouse for the railway goods sheds, when tho horso took fright—it is thought at a passing train—anil bolted. Mr Preston had his cousin in tho cart at tho time, and though they used their utmost endeavourto keep the horse on the road he proved too much for them, and wont with a clean jump over tho sido, just past the Auckland Fish Market. Tho occupants managed to get out before the cart wenb over. As tho tide was nob very high at the timo and ebbing, with the assistance of ._ dingy the horse's head was kept abovo water until ho was cub free from the trap. He was tiien swum over to the steps at tho Railway Wharf and landed none tho worse for his ducking, except that all the liveliness was gone oub of him. The case of drapery and tho cart were also got out by hauling them up tho breastwork with ropes. No damage was dono with the exception of the contents of the caso, which were slightly spoilt through their immersion in the water, and the driver may consider himself very lucky in getting back everything safe and intact. The lodging in question might form an obstacle if kepti free from dirt, but at present the accumulations off tho road have gradually gathered againsb it, making a slope which forms an easy transit over.
