At a recent five-weeks sitting .of the Native Lands Court at Kawhia, held by Judge Gudgeon, individual interests and petitions were defined in the Taharoa, Kawhia, Awaroa and Pirongia West blocks. The land was fairly divided between the INgatimaniapoto, and Ngatihikairo tribes. Some 74,000 acres were dealt with altogether. So_.e very valuable .areas of territory were awarded to the Ngatiwaniapoto, Ngatimahata anjl Ngatihikairo tribes. One valuable block was Te Awaroa, consisting of 8,000 acres on the eastern side of the harbour. Tha Waikato owners, although Kingites,decided'to go into Court, and Ratema, of Rotorua,. was there. It waa shown that Waikato wero entitled to the greater portion of the block, on the ground, of actual occupation since tho conquest of the N_ratitoa tribes, the former owners under Te Rauparaha. Ngatimaniapoto were awarded about SjOOO acre.. It is stated that the restrictions placed, on the native lands in the Kawnia are a very heavy handicap on the progress of the district.
