COUNTY COUNCIL CONFERENCE.
On Wednesday next a Conference of County Council delegates representing the Auckland provincial district will bo he.d at Palmerston Buildings to take into consideration and to pass resolutions upon a series of set questions which have already been submitted to individual county councils by circular. Amongst the proposals to be discussed ara the following :—(1) " That in the opinion of this Conference the following additional powers should bo conferred upon County Councils :— [a) The administration of Crown lands and the survey and construction of all roads to open up lands for sale, subject to the control of tho Minister of Lands. (Proposed by Captain MacMahon and Air J. McLeod.) (o) The administration of the Timber Floatage Act, and the granting of licenses thereunder ; all license fees to become county revenue. (Proposed by Captain MacMahon and Mr J. McLood.) (c) The Licensing Act should be amended in the direction of making the Couuty Council the sole Licensing Committee for the whole county; the local option clauses of tho Acb to remain unalteied. 2. That all subsidies paid to counties should be expended only on the main roads of the county, and such subsidy should be at the rate of £2 for every £1 expended on euch roads by the county (roads to include bridges). Alain roads to bo defined in each county by the Surveyor-General. 3. That it ie desirable that the Hospital and Charitable Aid Act should be amended so as to empower each local body to administer outdoor relief in its own distrieb, the cost to be a charge on the funds of such local body ; hospitals and refuges to romain under tho control and management of a Board appointed by the contributing bodies. Other motions will deal with endowment of counties, control of domain reserves, rating of native lands, amendment of the Rating Act, etc.
