THE EARL OF GLASGOW-
HIS PRELIMINARY TRAINING.
Regarding our new Governor, the "Mcl- ! bourne Standard " remarks :—'" That is a cheery picture which the cable present!). His Lordship tho Earl of Glasgow diligently trampins; around Bishopsgate Within, and sounding tho New Zealand merchants doing business in the world's metropolis anent the political condition and requirements of his new realm. A sort of Haroun al Raschid testing the feelings of his people, or perhaps, as a more fitting simile in relation to the prosaic characteristics of latter-day life, a land of gubernatorial commercial traveller. There is room for apprehension that hi s Lordship will derive a somewhat confused idea as to the role which is incumbent upon him across the seas. On the question of taxation of absentees he may find sufficient denunciation of tho policy of the Ministi'y from the New Zea- j land companies trading in London to start j him in his career as an opponent of the : Government of the day. There is, however, a touch of refreshing innocence about the announcement and the naive languago in which the Earl's motives and views are expressed which should disarm hostile criticism. The guilelessness of the sailor is indicated by the vigorousnosa of his preparations to rule conscientiously, vigorously, and, above all, constitutionally in a province of which, according to the Earl ci Onslow, ho is bub to become tho ' ornamental figurehead. . It would, perhaps, be unkind to anticipate collisions with authorities and other vexations for this vigorous ruler. Local fire of criticism will open on him presently, which may be sufficient tribulation. The opinion of His Lordship, who has considered the point for about two weeks, that tho colonies should not bo permitted to nominate • their own Governors, will render him still further a persona rp-ata in Now Zealand. And the concl.uding touch in the littlo cable talk which the Earl of Glasgow has vouchsafed to his new people is of itself a gem. There is a charming sou peon, of the painstaking and persevering tradesman starting business i\\ a new
locality about the annouvicemenb that
his Lordship 'relies upon energy and devotion to command success,' which,
even if it is open to th' 3 charge of being
hackneyed, is ab least practical. Viewed in this new light, the career of the Earl of
Glasgow in Australasia will be fraught with great interest."
