To the Editor: Sir,—On taking up the " Herald " this morning, I was surprised to see a whole list of our leading merchants and tradesmen agreeing to closa their respecbive places of business in order bhab a race meeting may bo held on the 18th inst. When shall we bo more practical? We can talk, and thab seems all. Here was an opportunity for us bo say no bo the Racing Club's request. Tho number of race meetings of late has been something appalling, and yet our leading merchants and others (some of them professing Christian men) are prepared bo close bheir places of business in order that another meeting may be held, and thus another opportunity given for our young men and others to be tempted by that legalised abortion, the totalisator. When shall we awake to see the evil arising out of this great delusion that is undermining all legitimate trade and making our young people dissatisfied with their several callings in life ?—Hoping something may be done, I am, etc., C.
