The Committee of the Auckland Swimming Club met last night. Mr J. A. Baker prssided. It was decided to send two representatives to Christchurch to take part in the Championship Meeting to beheld ab the end of next month. Mr H. J. Bailey was selected as one of the men, but test races will be held next week to selecfc the other representative.

The news of tlve death of Mr Joseph Glenny, of Devonport, at tho residence of his brother-in-law, Mr C. Cowan, at Mimiwhangata, near Whangarei, has been received with great regret by tho l a t a gentleman's Auckland and North Shore friends and acquaintances. Mr Glenny was on a visit to his relativo at Helena Bay at the time, and his death was in a great measure caused by exposure to the sun, bringing on a fatal attack of apoplexy. Mr Glenny was recently a guest on tlta Waitokuru Hot Springs and Coal Syndi. cate's excursion to the Miranda, and while there he complained of being ill. He had resided at the North Shore for several years past, and had a large number, of acquaintances throughout the colony. At the time of his death he was to a larea extent interested in sugar plantations i a Fiji. Many years ago he started in Ceylon as manager of coffee plantation, and waa therefor several years afterwards, coming out to the Fiji Group. He was at Levuk a all through the troublous trials when Fijj first became a British possession, and took part in tho famous '• annexation" demonstration. He was a personal friend of the lateThakombau, King of Fiji, and had in his possession the old - time " royal" seal" of thab dusky potentate. Mr Glenny ex/ perienced many perilous vicissitudes durine; his stay in Fiji, and it was only through higfirmness with the natives on more than one occasion that he escaped death. The cost of a waiting-room on the new Northcote Ferry Jetty ia estimated ab £200, and the erection of a suitable building 19 admittedly desirable. At a meeting of the Harbour Board held yesterday afternoon the chairman (Mr M. Niccol) moved to refer tho matter to the Works Committee, and Mr Witheford moved as an amendment, " That the work be done on condition that tho Ferry Company paid a rental equal to ten per cenb. on the cost of construction." Mr E. W. Alison said the Company was prepared to do so, but as there was deemed to bo no reason for undue haste in the matter, ib was agreed to adopt the course proposed by the chairman.

The ties for the Gentlemen's Championship Singles were drawn by the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association delegates yesterday afternoon (Tuesday). A shark about nine feet in length waa caught from the Fish Market steps this morning by a young man named Inekip. The shark was seen hovering about in the vicinity of the Dovonport ferry tee, and a good stout line and hook, baited with mullet, was put oub for his entertainment. The shark was apparently pretty hungry, and went for the mullet without due consideration of the consequences. He took tho hook most effectively, and was soon hauled _p on the low landing, where dissecting operations were subsequently carried on in view of an admiring crowd.

The Mount Albert ratepayers are determined to do all they can to prevent the depositing of refuse and rubbish in that district. Ab last night's' meeting, it was agreed to send a letter to tho Central Board of Health at Wellington, pointing out thab there had been sickness in the vicinity of Mount Albert lately) resulting in two deaths, owing to the refuse being deposited there. The .contractor had brought the matter before the City Council, and thab body stated they had nothing to do with where he deposited the refuse. Ab one of the places where the deposit is taking place heavy rain will empty the refuse into the Western Springs water supply. The ratepayers ask that tho deposit on the New North Road should be covered with soil, and also draw attention to the opinio? of the medical mon on the nuisance.

The East Ward; members; of the City Council have located the new lamps eel apart for that division of the city as follows: —One at junction of -Karangahape Road and Liverpool-street, one at the junction ot Lyndoeh-stroeb and Alexandra-streeb, one ab bhe foob of Emily Place, bwo in Stanleystreet, and one in Quay-street. Three lamps, the light from which is at present obstructed by telegraph _ posts, are also to be removed to other positions.
