MECHANICS' BAY DRAINAGE.
Before taking his departure by train en route for Stratford, the Hon. A. J. Cadman had a conference with the members of the Parnell Borough Council and His Worship tho Mayor of Auckland on tho subject of drainage. Io was stated by Mr MeGabe thab the City Engineer had estimated the cost of connecting the Parnell drainage with tho main sewer at £346, and for the whole extension to the breakwater £3,842. After discussing the matter, Mr Cadman said it appeared to him that the ouly claim which could be mado against the Government would bom respect of Hospital drainage, and he would give the deputation an answer off-hand, for this would establish a precedent. The fact of a drain going through Government land, or land taken for railway purposes, did not give them a claim against the Government, unless that land wiis utilised. He promised to bring tho matter before the Government, but said he did nob think there was any chance of tho Government continuing the main drain to the breakwater. He feared they could scarcely induce tho Railway.Commissioners to reclaim the intake unless they absolutely required to- do so for railway purposes. Ib was stated by Mr Crowthcr that the Government had contributed £500 towards the cost of the present Stanley-street drain, and its total "cosb was over £4.000, bhe balance being borne by the city. The Governmenb gave no promise to continue the drain or contribute towards its cost. Mr Cadman finally promised to communicate further with "the deputation after his SObtira to Wellington.
