Pahiatua, this day. John Summerfiel_, a sawmill hand, was found drowned in a bucket of water this morning. He had been drinking heavily or the last few days, and had evidently fone to a bucket for a drink.

Timaru, this day. Bowles, an innkeeper ab Terouka, was trying, to navigatn a canoe on the Opihi lagoon yesterday, when ib capsized and bo •was drowned.

Mr Younghusband, of the firm of C. F. James and Co., has received information that his partner, Mr C. F. James, of thia city, well known in connection with the volunteer movement here, died on the 4th of August in South Africa. Mr James was on his way to Fort Charter with a convoy when he was taken ill, and had to follow more slowly. He was brought into Fort Charter insensible, having suffered from a sharp attack of dysentery, and shortly afterwards expired. Mr James was at one time in the employ of tho firm of Stone Brothers, and subsequently he established the firm of C. F. James and Co., of Auckland, and carried on this business successfully until the time of his departure for South Africa. His connection with the volunteers dated back to his boyhood. He was a very efficient officer, wa3 for a long time Sergeant of the City Guards, and subsequently became Lieutenant and then Captain of tho " 0 " Battery of Artillery. Under his command the " O " Battery was one of the smartest and best-drillod corps in "Auckland. The deceased leaves relatives and many friends in Auckland to mourn his untimely death.
