The January issue of th,e " New Zealand Farmer" ahvs.ys assumes to a certain extent the character of a holiday number, and this year as usual there are special literary features in keeping with the festive season. Still business is nob by any means overlooked, as may be gathered by the titles of the following articles in the number just published and now before us. "The Smut of Oats," "Treatment of Foofcrofe in Sheep," "Breeding for Wool in the North," a short but thoroughly practical article dealing - with the causes i'or the lower soiling'value of' Auckland wool as compared with Southern prices. Other articles treat of our butter export trade, a new kind of disc churn lately exhibited in England, the spraying of' fruit; trees for fungoid blights, the management of lemon and orange plantations, by Mr Dobbie, of Whangarci, two excellent contributions on poultry managoment, etc. The illustrations include a special engraving by a French artist, entitled " A Mouthful of Hay," depicting a young woman in a field with an armful of hay, feeding a group of cattle. There are two splendid engravings of pure bred Hampshire Down sheep, a portrait of the celebrated St. Bernard dog Plinlimmon, and another of a pure bred trumpeter pigeon. There is also a collection of Xmas stories, verses and games, and a Xmas letter from " Uncle Ned " to his nephews and nieces in connection with the Children's Post Office department of the journal. We have only enumerated a small part of tho contents of a thoroughly good number.
