THOMAS S. JONES COMMITTED

FOR TRIAL,

Ix the case of Thomas Slator Jones, charged with setting fire to a dwelling house in Victoria-street with intent to defraud the Royal Insurance Company, the hearing oj evidence was completed after we went to presa yesterday. Martha Hodgkins in further examination said that, so far as she knew, the insurance policy was not in her house. The accused carried jewellory backwards and forwards between the shop and the house in a black bag. The jewellery, etc., was placed in her care by the accused. He did not ask her to lock it up, but she did so for her own protection. She believed the accused slept at her house last on the 12th insb.

The evidence having been read over, Jlr Tole submitted that there was no proof of arson brought home to the accused, and that there was not sufficient to warrant His Worship in sending: the accused for trial.

His Worship said there was no direct evidence as to arson, but the circumstances were such as to create a grave suspicion in the matter. lie did not think a grand jury would throw the bill out.

The accused reserved his defence, and was committed to take his trial ab the next session of tho Supreme Court.
