WEST END MUSICAL UNION.

Thk West End Musical Union performed Maxfield's Christinas cantata "Star of the East " at tho I'onsonby Hall last evening before a good audience. The choir pieces were very well rendered, and showed a marked improvement on their performance at a previous concert; and the orchestra, led by Mr J. Hemus, with Mr W. J. Reea at the piano, discharged their duty in a praiseworthy manner. The soloists were Miss V. Plummer (soprano), Miss Laing (contralto), Mr L. Daw-son (tenor), and Mr R. Eagleton (bass). The solos were all well rendered. Miss Plummer was very successful in the recitative and air, "Fear not," and also in "Unnumbered Bleseings," the latter being so pleasantly rendered as to secure a recall. The incidental duet, trio and quartette were taken by tho soloists named, and on the whole went o(r very successfully. The concert generally afforded evidence of energetic rehearsal, arid reflected credit on the conductor, Mr J. H. Philpotb. There is room for a good musical society in Ponsonby, and the West End Musical Unon. is deserving of every encouragement.
