TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.
At a special meeting of the above held on Thursday,alargeamouutof business was gob through, and a volume of correspondence read and dealt with. A letter from the Brisbane Trades Council re International Federation, was ordered to be laid on the table bill nexb meeting. A letter was also received from bhe Sydney Trades Council, condemning sentences recently passed upon certain Unionists there. The Auckland Council decided to forward petitions from as many organisations as possible to the New South Wales Legislature, prajing for the release of the men in question. A balance-sheeb of bhe boot operatives' recent strike fund was received with thanks, and also a report of that body's re-formation, which, under the circumstances was considered satisiactory. Reports of various Unions' procedure was considered very encouraging, one, which had collapsed some six months since, was reported to have re-formed with 150 members, and others which had suspended operations anticipate similar procedure. Several societies were reported by the secretary as havingpaid theircapitation, and altogether bheir position, was considered to be improving considerably. The National Association of New Zealand was freely discussed, and steps taken to counteract the political influence expected to be exer-
cised thereby. Arrangements were made bo procure a hearty reception-for bhe Premier on his arrival in Auckland. Mr Busb stated thab ho was absolutely compelled to ask bhe Council to accept his resignation as Secrebary, so long tendered, but held in abeyance from bime to time. Circumstances compelled .him to relinquish bhe posibion. A general feeling of regreb was expressed and bhe united appreciation of Mr Bust's past services ordered to be placed on record with an expression of regreb ab bhe loss of so able and energetic an officer. The president, was requested to convey the above feelings with besb wishes for their retiring secretary's fubure prosperity and happiness to Mr Busb by lebber bearing bho Council stamp. The retiring secretary replied thanking tho Council, and proposed Mr Thos. Tudehope as successor, tbab gentleman consenting to accepb the dual position of secrebary and treasurer till the nexb meeting, which was arranged to take placs on the 10th of January, 1892.
