A GROWL.
(To the Sporting Editor.)
Sir, —During avisit of some of yoursporting men toTaranaki, Iheard several remarking ab the delay and trouble in getting tickets ab the totalisators. Being a visitor to your beautiful city, I took a trip out 60 Ellerelie on Saturday laab to witness the Hunt Club races, which were no doubt an unqualified success, bar one thing— the manner in which the machines were conducted. In the second race I was unable to get a ticket on account of the slowness of the officials. Although annoyed ab the time I made no remark, especially as the horse I wished to back finished at the wrong end ; but in the last race, having a £10 note to invest, half for myself and another half for a friend, I made frantic efforts to purchase my tickets, bub the slowness of the sellers debarred dozens besides myself from getting the same. This was terribly annoying. My horse won. How am I co face my friend when I return, who will naturally expect his half ? Again, the idea of having one man to sell to the whole of the outside public, who cannot afford to pay for the privilege of betting in the paddock—it is absurd". The Club must have lost hundreds of pounds, that were lefts in the hands of the investors at the start of the race. No doubt you have plenby of grumblers here without my doing co, bub I expected something better than the working of the machines on Saturday, after such remarks as I overheard at home. How the proprietors of the machines geb through the Summer and Autumn Meetings of the A.R.C. at the rate they were going on Saturday, mystifies me altogether. Really, Auckland must have a slow-goiug lot of sports to allow ib. Hoping that you will find a corner for this growl, and that I have nob trespassed too much upon your time, —lam, etc., Disappointed. Taranaki. [Our correspondent is confused. Messrs Blomfield and W. Adams work the tobalisators ab the Summer and Autumn Meetings of the A.R.C. On Saturday last Messrs C. F. Andrew and L. Adams had charge of the machines. The two firms are in no way connected with each other.]
