FIRE IN HAYDN-STREET.
A stable situated behind Mr Souster's residence in Haydn-street, off Wellingtonstreet, was destroyed by fire shortly before 10 o'clock this morning. Mr Souster used part of the stable as a cow shed, and when the fire broke out the cow was unfortunately in the enclosure. Mrs Souster, who was in the house at the time, became alarmed by the excited .appearance of a child, who had just run in to her, and going to the door found the shed in a blaze. She tried to get the cow out, but the animal, already tortured by the fiame3, kicked and plunged in a etate of frenzy, and the fire spread so rapidly that she had to be left to her fate. Mrs Souster then gave the alarm, and though assistance was speedily forthcoming neither the shed nor the cow could be saved. The Fire Brigade under Superintendent Hughee were on the spot very smartly indeed but too late to do much beyond extinguish the fire smouldering in the ruina. Neighbours rendered good service at an earlier stage in keeping several other outbuildings wet during the time they wore threatened by spreading of the fire. The origin of the outbreak is unknown.
