THE EAST ROAD.
Notwithstanding the assurance given by the Minister for Works that plans and specifications for the East Road extension would be placed on view in Auckland city, it appears that this has not yet been done. In our lasb issue an advertisement appeared inviting tenders for construction of about eleven miles of road from Stratford towards Mangaroa. Plans and specifications were stated to be on view, amongst various places, at the Survey Department, Auckland, but on application being made there this morning, contractors were informed that the required information was nob available. The time for sending in tenders is limited to noon on the 21st inst., and it is absurd to expect contractors to obtain the necessary details for such an important work in the intervening space of time with neither plans nor specifications at their service yet. Representations in reference to this matter have been made to, Mr J. M. Shera, M.H.R., and he has telegraphed to the Minister for Works strongly urging that the time for receiving tenders should be extended, and plans and specifications forwarded to Auckland as speedily as possible. A private letter received this morning from a New Plymouth resident states that the people of Inglewood, Stratford, Waitaraandftew Plymouth are all willing to co-operate with Auckland in obtaining the Taranaki connection, and are anxious for tha success of the efforts of the Northern Railway League. A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Northern Railway League was held at noon to-day, when various matters connected with the aim of the League were considered. . A centrally-situated office ou the ground floor of the Arcade Buildings has been engaged for the time. The treasurer reported a substantial sum in hand t although only a beginning has been made, in canvassing for subscriptions. It was resolved to advertise for applications for the position of secretary, and the Committee are taking active measures to obtain all definite information possible in the shape of reports and maps of the various routes, so thab the public may be well posted with respect to the details of the question,
