For Tales not exceeding in length three columns of the Stak, having special reference to Christmas time, and having tho (eeno wholly or partially laid in New Zealand, the following prizes will be given :— First Prize ... £3 0 0 Second Prize, "Defenders ol New Zealand," value 2 0 0 No. 2—Christmas Poem, j The Poem must deal with the season aa I sxperienced in New Zealand, and not exceed fifty lines in length. Firpt Prize, " Early History of Now Zealand," value £2 6 0 3econd Prize, Handsome Book. Mo. 3—Juvenile Competition Open to Boya or Girls under 16 years ot age, for the best NARRATIVE OF NEW ZEALAND LIFE AND ADVENTURE. (True or fictitious}, in length about'one column of the Star. The following. Prizes are offered :— FirstPrize.handsomeßook, value £2 0 0 Second Prize, Book, value _ 010 0 GENERAL CONDITIONS. 1. Each competition is open to all New Zealand. 2. All contributions must be original, nob previously published, and written legibly on one side of the paper. 3. Communications must reach the Star Office not later than Ist November, and must in every case be accompanied by the name and addreee of the sender, which should be enclosed in separate sealed' envelope, marked outside with a motto corresponding with the norn de plume attached to the competition article. 4. Competitors are requested to address their contributions "Christmas Competition (No. 1, 2, or 3, as the case may be), Star Oflice, Auckland." 5. The Proprietor of the Star shall have tho right of publishing any of the contributions sent in, whether awarded a prize or not. 6. The prize stories, etc., with the name and address of the writer attached, will be published in the Star Christmas Number of 1891. 7. Competitors are invited to send pen or pencil illustrations with their papers ; but this is not obligatory, and compliance or non-compliance with tho requeob will' nob affect the judging.
