TEMPERANCE SOCIETIES.

A vory merry and cordial company wera bhe Good Templars of bhe Star of Newton Lodge, who foregabhered in force ab the Protestant Hall iv Newton on Sept. 24. The following ladies presided and assisted at bhe tables : —Mrs aud Miss Lightfoot, Mrs Cann, Mrs William, and Misses Archer (2), Robb, Nicholson, Marson, Weaver. Subsequently, a flute and piano duet wa3 given by Messrs Phillpot and Wilson. Songs were rendered by the following ladies and gonblemen:—Mr Vinnicom.b, Miss Lee, Mr Simpson, Miss Laing, iVir perry, Mr Newbegin, Miss Sime, Miss Dickson, Miss Joll, and Mr Boulter. A couple of duebs were given by Mr and Mrs Simpson, a violin solo by Mr Hood, and a valse for flube and piano by Messrs Phillpot and Wilson. MrT. W. Glover, P.G.C.T., and Grand Lodge lecburer for bhe colony of New Zealand, commenced his work on Oct. Ist at the Star of Newton Lodge, Protestant Hall, Karangahape Road, where the Good Templars of the city were invited to meet and inaugurate the mission. Amongst those present where Sir William Fox, Messrs C. G. Hill, E. Lightfoot, and other prominenb members. Mr Glover spoke as to his appointment, explaining that he was fully commissioned for bhe work by Bro. R. N. Adams, G.C.T., Dunedin, and authorised by the Grand Lodge Executive to confer that degree at such times and places as considered necessary. Also that one of the most important parts of his work would be to look after the polibical parb of bhe organisation, which, now seeing that our sisters in all probability will have secured the franchise before another general election, should be at once attended to in order that their votes may be felt on greab social questions as comprised in the Order. The members' were also reminded that every subordinate lodge now had an electoral agent with a grand electoral superintendent for the colony, bhe dubies of elecboral agenb being to keep a record of every voter in the Lodge, and to see that every name not on the roll is put on, also gathering from outside the Order all names of electors willing to dedicate their votes to the return of candidates pledged to give the people power to absolutely prohibit bhe liquor traffic at the ballot-box without compensation.
