THE ANCIENT STILE.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —The model stile constructed by Mr J. Page, of Kingsland, ia a good illustration of the first kind of lever, and it would be worth noting:, a3 we have settlers from North America among us, if the earlier colonists there brought the idea with them, and introduced it in any of the States. I have suggested to Mr Page that in cases where cabtle mighb atbempb bo get over the stile, a large percussion cap might be occasionally placed at night between the heavy clappers. This would be better than planting a gun, and allowing the breaching bullock to pull the trigger, as is the usual custom to frighten the four-footed trespassers. In the State of Ponnyslvania, I have seen a lever of the same kind used for drawing water from a well, the weight being the heavy roob-end of a tree, and the power the long lever ab the other side of the fulcrum. This, as well as the wheel and rope, is also used in Palestine.—l am, etc., ■ C.
