STABBED WITH AN UMBRELLA.
THE VICTIM DYING.
An assault of a most extraordinary character is reported, to have taken place in George-street, Sydney, recently. The victim of the assault is a young man named John Allen, 19, a vanman, residing at 39, Darlington. From the par-, ticuiars furnished by' the police" 16 appears that there was some dispute ■• in a tobacconist's shop in George-street with regard to a dividend claimed by some pereon on a totalisator believed to have been in the shop:- During an altercation Allen came upon the sceho, and while endeavouring to quell the disturbance was poked in the left eye with an umbrella by a publican named Thomas Dalreen. Somebody afterwards took Allen to the Sydney Hospital, where he was admitted by Dr. J. G. McKay. It was found that Allen's eye was completely destroyed, and that the eharp end of the'umbrella had penetrated the socket about an inch and a half. The doctors reported Allen'a condition as having become alarming, and the police were informed that he might die any moment. Inquiries were made, and Seniorconstable Carberry arrested. Dalveen. Allen's condition is reported to be worse. "The publican, Thomas McDonald Dalveen, was brought before the Water Police Court on the charge of having inflicted grievous bodily harm upon John Allen, and ab the, application of Senior-Constable Carberry was remanded for a week. . Bail was allowed—himself in £100, and another eurety of the same amount. Dalveen is the licensee of the Victoria Cafe Hotel, 315, George-street, where the assault is supposed to have taken place.
