Loxdon, October 6. Obituary: W. H. Smith, aged 6i.
[The Right Hon. Win, Henry Smith, D.C.L., M.P., D.L., eon of Mr Wm. Smith, of the Strand, bookseller and publisher, was born in London on June 24th, 1825. Hβ was educated at the Grammar School, Tavistock, and in due course became & partner in his father's bookseller's firm. In 1865 he unsuccessfully contested Westminster in the Conservative interest, but his candidature was renewed with success in November, 186S, when he defeated Mr Jno. Stuarb Mill. He continued to sit for Westminster down to 1885, when, after the Redistribution Act, he wa3 returned for the Strand, being again elected in 18S6. He was Financial Secretary of the Treasury from 1884 to the end of 18S7, when he wa3 appointed First Lord of the Admiralty, in succession to the late Mr Ward Hunt. Hβ went out of office with the Conservatives in 1880, and was appointed Secretary of State for Wall in 1885, on the formation of the Conservative Government in that year. On the resignation of Mr Wm. Hart Dyke in 1886 Mr Smith was appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland, bub the Salisbury Governments fell immediately afterwards, and he held the appointment for only six days. In Lord Salisbury's second Administration he was appointed Secretary of State for Hull. When the Ministry was reconstructed on the resignation of Lord R. Churchill Mr Smith became first Lord of the Treasury and Leader of the House of Commons.. He wa%, a member of the First and Second School Boards for London, retiring in 1874, through the pressure of official duties. The University of Oxford conferred upon him honorary degree of D.C.L. in 1879, and he was presented with the freedom of the Stationers Company in 1889. He was a magistrate and D.L. for Middlesex, and a magistrate for Herts and Oxon, and a member of the Council of King's College, London.]
Berlin, October 6. The death is announced of Karl I.j King of Wurtemburg, aged 68.
