Napier, Monday. The first day's races of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Spring Meeting were most successful from all points of view. There was beautiful weather and a large attendance. The sum of £5,479 was passed through the totalisator. The Club deducted an extra lh per cent, to moet the new tax, but though a little grumbling was heard, the amount handled showed that the investments were not checked. Hakimana was quickesb away, followed by Namoa, Cretonne, Fraternite, and Clanranald last. Afe the- railway bend the field closed up, and 'Cretonne, Rosefeldb, and Bippomenes were alternately for a brief moment in the lead, but entering the straight Fraternite joined the leaders, and a splendid struggle commenced. A hundred yards from home the issue appeared to lie between Fraternite and Hippomencs, bub Clanranald came with a rush of meteoric brilliancy, and outpacing his opponents won a splendidly - contested race by Jhalf a length from Fraternite. Adelaide (Bsb), Ua (Bst), St. Catherine (S3t), Mystic (Bst) also started. Mystic was left ab the post. The field ran in a bunch, led by Ua, until entering the straight, ■when and North Atlantic singled themselves out, but the firso-named had always a trifle the best of it, ;ind won by a good length. Fraternite and Boulanger made a forward movement, but no change took place until reaching 6he straight, which Thane entered first; but here the jockeys of Boulanger and Fraternite sat down, and a magnificent finish to the post saw Boulanger get up in the lasb stride, and gain first place by a head, while not more than a nose separated Thane from Fraternite.
