THE WAIKATO SEAT.
MR LAKE'S ADDRESS.
MR BRYCE SPEAKS
(EY TELEGRAPH.— OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
rvV;!:-■ Hamilton, this day. Mr Lake addressed the electors last night in the Public Hall, lb was a well abtended meebing of over two hundred. Mr R. F. Sandos was voted to the chair in the absence of the Mayor. Mr Bryce, who was in the audience, was invited to a seat on the platform by the Chairman, and was received with cheers. Mr Lake briefly reviewed the lasb Financial Statement, pointing out that in spite of the pretended sympathy with the working men, tha Governmenb had taken no sbeps to relieve the taxation on the necessaries of life. He expressed a strong objection to the Government taxation proposals, believing them unjust and inconsistent and he would nob be surprised if they remained mere proposals and nothing more—bho property tax remaining the law of the land. The uncertainty thus produced was mosb pernicious. He objected strongly to the withdrawal of the right of freehold from perpetual leases and bolstering a new system by lowering the interesb to four per cent., thereby entailing a serious loss to the colony. After questions were answered, Mr Laing proposed and Mr Cassidy seconded a vote of thanks and confidence in Mr Lake, which was carried with acclamation. Mr Bryce then addressed the meeting, explaining fully and satisfactorily his reasons for resigning, and in a feeling speech, during which he was frequently applauded, he bade farewell to his constituents. Ab bhe conclusion of the address Mr George Edgecumbe proposed, and Captain Runciman seconded, "Thab this meeting entirely sympathises with Mr Bryce in the unmerited injustice the Governmenb has endeavoured to put upon him, and wish to place on record its unabated confidence in him now, and hope thab ab some future time he might again represent us." This was carried with acclamation.
