BOROUGH COUNCILS.
NEWTON.
The regular - fortnightly meeting of the Newton Borough Council was held last night iv the Council Chambers, Rose Road. Presenb : Mr S. C. Brown (Mayor), and Crs. Webley, Cox, Donald, Porter, English, and Holden. Mr J. Currie, the Town Clerk, reported a breach of the waterworks by-laws against Mr A. G. Baddilly, plumber. It was resolved by the Council that unless he took oub a license legal proceedings would be taken. Mr Jas. Ryan, of Princesstreet, Cox's Creek, applied for a gravel footpath leading to his cottage. The matter was referred to the Streets Committee with power to act. The Town Clerk reported that he had visitedHellaby's, Faulder's, and tho city abattoirs, and had found them in a cloan and satisfactory condition. A circular was read from Mr J. E. Fitzgerald, Government Auditor-General, in reference to moneys which had been embezzled by officers belonging to public local bodies, and pointing out that tho only means by which deficiencies can be prevented is by constant vigilance on the part of the different Councils. The letter was ordered to be acknowledged.
