ANNUAL MEETINGS.

At the annual meeting of the Christchurch Kennel Club, Mr W. H. Wynn Williams was re-oiec.feed president. The balance-eheeb showed a small credit balance aifcer paying all expenses. The assets amount to -.C 26 ; the liabilities are nil.

Tho accounts of tho Auckland Chrysanthemum Society show that the Society is in a sound financial condition. The assets amount to £77 f>s, of which £23 2s is a cash balance. There are no accounts owing by the Society. In pursuance of rule 12, about 750 chrysanthemum plants were distributed, free of cost, among the members. The number of members for the year is 180, exclusive of 73 new members for next, season.

Tho annuptl meeting of the Auckland Institute was held en June Bfch. There was a very fair attendance. Professor F. D. Brown occupied the chair. There have been a good many donations since la3t meeting. Prof. Brown read a long but interesting inausural address. He deDrecated the reading of scientific papers beiug tho chief object of the Socilebv. The day for reading papers had,be explained, passed away when cheap printing began. It waa tho reading of such papers that made their meetings dull, as some members unhesitatingly declared therm to be. The causes, the precedents, aaid the general use of such papers wore discussed afc length. After some remarks on the endowments and general position of the Institute, the speaker proceeded to give his views on desirable improvements, which might easily bo mad.c. Financial details showed tho Institute, well able to undertake the work. He hoped that before long they would be able bo place before the public a well ordered collection of Maori workmanship befitting a city whose history was so intermingled with that of the natives.

The annual meeting of the Auckland Auxiliary Bieanch of the British and Foreign Bible Society was held on the Bth of June in the Tabernacle. Colonel Haultain presided. »The balance-sheet was as follows :—Receipts : Balance from last year, £17 Is Id ; public meeting, £5 ; legacy (tne late Mr C. O. Davis), £100 ; sale of Bibles, £240 12s 10d ; branch contributions, £57 12s 6d ; sums collected, £67 16s 6d ; total, £488 2s lid. Expenditure : Remittances to parent Society, £183 14s 6d ; Auckland Auxiliary purchase accou.nts, £150 6s ; miscellaneous, £134 12s Id ; balance, £19 10s 4d. Mr VV. Sayce, minister of the Friends from England, addressed the meeting, advocating the claims of the British and Foreign Bib.le Society, and he recommended a more earnest searching of the Holy Scriptures rather than accepting other men's opinions. ( On June 16th the annual business meetI Ins: of subscribers to the Auckland Sailors' I Home was held in the Mission Hall attached to the Homo, Quay-street. Hie Lordship Bishop Covvie, President of the Council of the Home, presided. The annual report presented by the Council states that the average daily number of inmates during the year has been 24, besides a further number who have taken separate meals, equal to another o - 5 per diem ; altogether about the same numbers as those who were provided for during the preceding twelve months. In consequence of the increased price of provisions, particularly of butchers' meat, vvhich was 50 per cent, higher than last year, the rates charged for board and lodging have nob been sufficient to meet all the household expenses by £180, which has been furnished from the General Endowment. The cost of each inmate has been £40 10s per annum, and the payments have averaged only £35 per head. £9 17s has been written off as bad debts, and the arrears due by inmates on the 31st March amounted to £56 12s 6d, most of which, it is expected, will be recovered in due course. The chief event of fche past year has been the completion of the new Mission Hall, ab a cost of £1,070 8s Bd. Ib was formally opened on the 23rd July." The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The officers for the ensuing year were re-ap-pointed as follows : —President: The Right Reverend the Bishop of Auckland. Vice - President : Captain H. F. Anderson. C, McMillan, Mr E. Withy. Honorary Surgeon : Dr. T. Hope Lewis. The name of Captain Tilly was added to the Council in the place of that oi tho late Mr G. P. Pierce.

The annual meeting of members of the Society of Arts was held on June 4th, when about twenty ladies and gentlemen were present. The report showed that during the past year the Society had been fairly successful. The finances showed a small credit balance. The annual examination of the pupils in the district public schools in first grade tree-hand drawing was held on the 13th of December, IS9O, when 64 schools sent up 926 drawings, and 170 of these obtained certificates, 33 being specially marked " good." The prize—a guinea box of mafthematical instruments—was awarded to Miss Grace Andrews, of Katikati. The annual competitions were conducted as usual, the entries in most sections being in excess of those of the last year, and the work on the whole of a very satisfactory character. Several first and second awards were gained by the pupils of the Elam School of Art. The epecial prize of three guineas offered by H. Brett, Esq., for the best work illustrating the word "Surprised," wasawarded to Mies Marion Wright for an excellent portrait in water colour. The Committee regretted that there was no competition for the three guineas offered by J. R. Hanna, Esq., for photography. The silver medal of the Society was carried off by Miss E. G. Culliford, of Chrisfcchurch, with an excellent piece of still life in oil. The bronze medal was taken by Mr W. J. Crowther, Auckland, with a tine work in the same section. The balance-sheet showed receipts : Balance from last year, £98 13s yd ; members' subscription, £76 ; exhibition receipts, £97 6s ; pictures sold, £76 3a ; miscellaneous, £95 4s sd; total, £368 4s 2d. Expenditure : General, £37 3s 8d ; exhibition expenses, £79 8s lid ; competition expenses, £19 19s ; catalogues, £10 ; cash to artists for pictures sold (less commission), £71 19a 9d ; secretary's honorarium, £50; total, £268 11s 4d. Balances : Savings Bank, £77 18s Id; Bank of New Zealand, £19 9s 8d ; in'hand, £2 ss. Total, £99 12s 9d. The report was adopted. Officers were elected as follows: —Patrons: W. Aitkcn, E. A.
