CENSUS RETURNS.

The following are the census returns ap proxitnately for the provincial districts : —

A comparison has been drawn oub by the Census Department of the population of the chief towns and suburbs, which may be properly counted as belonging to them, showing the difference between this and last enumeration. Auckland ia now 52,432 againat 57,048; Wellington is now 33,138 against 27,833. Dunedin is 45,829 against 45,528: Invercarpill, 7,999 against 8,939 ; Napier, 8,435 against 7,680; Nelson, 6,675 against 7,315. A striking feature shown by the recent! enumeration is that in every place except Napier females are in excess of males. In Dunediu this excosa is no leas than 2,245,

The census returnsof the Maori population (in figures subject to revision) are : North Island, 39,452 ; South Island, 1,860. Total, 41,312. The census return of 188(3 was 41,432, so that the quinquennial census just taken shows a decrease of 120. The following is an analysis of the Maori returns for the North Island : — The counties north af Auckland give 4,617 males, 3,792 females, and 225 half-castes. The West Coast counties: 852 males, 675 females, 104 half-castes. Hutt and Wairarapa: 532 males, 405 females, 62 half-caste 3. Cook and Waiapu : 1,768 males, 1,504 females, 269 half-castes. South Island :—ln Otago and Southland there are 130 males, 115 females, and 210 half-castes : total, 455. Canterbury has 312 males, 293 females, 173 half-caste* : total, 778. West Coast: 64 males, 47 females, 7 half-castes : total, 118. Nelson. and Marlborough : 214 males, 203 females, 92 half-castes : "total, 509.
