BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The Board mcc yesterday afbernoon. Present : Messrs Udy (presiding), Motion, Muir, Grant, Buckhursb, Luke, and Lennox.

Chairman's Report. — This reporb stabed that) leave of absence had been granted to Miss E. Aickin, Mount Eden, three weeks, illness, and Miss H. McGee, East Tamaki, two days, illness. _ Mr J. Dean had been temporarily appointed assistant ab Mounb Eden. East Tamaki.—A deputation of members of the East Tamaki School Committee waited on the Board in reference to tho proposed new school ab East Tamaki. Mr Cowail acted as spokesman,—The Board decided to defer tho question of a new school until after the election of the new Committee for East Tamaki. . Native Schools.—A reply was received from the Governmenb in reference to the Board's offer bo bake over bhe nabive schools for £5 per head par annum capitation, making the objection that this was too much.—lt was resolved to adhere to tho original decision. Painting Schools.— Mrßuckhurst moved "Thab Regulation No. 10 re painting of school buildings be rescinded." He pointed out that in many instances bhe arbibrary regulation ordering school buildings to be fe-paintod every five years was mosb unfair, and bhat very many School Committees acbually had nob the requisite funds to paint the buildings.— Mr.Lennox suggested thab ib mighb be bhe best course bo pursue to allow those School Committees, twenty-three in all, who had nob yeb painted their schools, to do bo this year at their own expense, and then give ellecb to Mr Buckhur.t's wishes by making a small grant to all Commibbees for painting purposes.—The motion was carried, it being understood that Mr Buckhurat would embody in his resolution Mr Lennox's suggestion. Power of School Committees.—Mr Buckhurst moved : "That Regulation No. 5 be amended by erasing the words in parenbhesis" (wibh bhe sancbion of the Board), "and thab all words after the word 'property' be struck out." . He bhoughb ib was quibe unnecessary bo insisb on bhe Board being consulted in every litblo paltry matter needing attending to, such as repairing play-grounds, planting trees, ebc. —The Chairman poinbed oub bhab bhe Board could nob alter the Act, and consequently could not alter the Board regulations, but they had always given effect to the spirit of Mr Buckhurst's wishes.—lt was eventually resolved to give effect bo bhe latter portion of the motion, "That the regulation be amended by all the words after the word * property' be struck out." Monitors. —Mr Muir moved, " Thab regulation No. 55 regarding monibors be expunged."—Messrs Lennox and Luke opposed the motion, pointing out that so long as children employed as monitors did nob take part in the actual work of teaching there could Jpe no abuse of the regulation. —The motion was carried.

Pokeno School.—An application was made from a number of residents near Pokeno, asking that the Board might reconsider the decision regarding the enlargement of tho school, in. order to make inquiries as to the advisability of erecting a new school in the district for the accommodation of those children who were unable to attend the Pokeno School.—Referred to Committee.
