OBITUARY.

Mr J. Chadwick, of Tauranga, an old and highly respected settler, died on May 13th of bronchitis.

James Wilfcie, bookseller of Dunedin, well known in connection with acclimatisation, has died from pneumonia after a short illness.

The Rev. Hori Te Kurei, Wesleyan native minister, died at Taheke, in the North, on May 7, from inflammation of the lungs. The deceased was a native whose rank as a chief, and whose etetling character and manly bearing' won the esteem of all who knew him.

David Caro, wine and 3pirit merchant, died ab Uhristchurch on April 30th from diabetes. Hβ ; arrived in- Canterbury in 1862, and was a prominent member of the Jewish congregation, and a man much liked for his kindness of hearb and charitable disposition.

Information has been received of the death of Tamasese, the German nominee for the throne of Samoa. For some time he had been suffering greatly, and his sufferings culminated in hie death on the 18th inst. at Saluafata, where he had been for some time staying. The primary cause of his death was Brighb's disease. His death ought to have a beneficial effect on Samoan politics.

Mr W. N. Blair died ab Wellington on May 4th at midnight. The cause of death was disease of the kidneys, from which he had been Buffering for a considerable time past. Beceased came to Otago in 1862. Hβ was District Engineer for Ofcago, and then Resident Engineer of the Middle Island, and on Mr Blackett's appointment as Consulting Engineer in London, he succeeded him aa Engineer-in-Chief. The remains of the late W. N. Blair were escorted to the steamer T&kapuna at Wellington on the 6th by a cortege consisting of some hundreds on foot, and a number of carriages. The pall-bearerswere: Hie Honor Mr Justice Donnisfcon, Sir Robert Stout, the Hon. J. M. Larnach, and Messrs J. H. Cock, W. M. Hannay, G. S. Cooper, J. A. McArbhur, and Dr. MacGregor, The Ministry was represented by the Hon. Mr Ballanee and the Hon. Mr Buckley. The coffin was placed in a boat for Dunodin, where the funeral took place on the Bth in&t* A short service was held at Knox Church, to which place the body had been removed. The Rev. Dr. Stuart delivered an address. The coffin was then removed by the members of the Gaelic Society, and the funeral procession moved over to the Northern Cemetery, whore Dr. Stuarc officiated.

Another old colonist: has passed away in bhe person of Mr James Stewart Hamilton, of Tuhinmba, near Drury. The deceased was the fourth son of the late Dr. Jas Hamilton. Hβ arrived in Auckland in December, 1850, together with three brothers, including the Mesers Hamilton Brothers, chemists, of this city. Mr J. S. Hamilton figured conspicuously in the attack on Burt's farm daring the Waikato war, with the aid of a farm servant putting to flight a band of Maoris who wera filing into the building occupied by Mrs Watson and her daughter. Latterly the deceased has been occupied in the cultivation of a block of land at Tuhimata, where he had established an attractive home.

The news of the death of Mr F. H. Edgecumbe, of the Government Survey Department, has caused widespread feelings of regret. Mr Edgecumbehad bean employed forfourteen months oh a survey of the city, which he had nearly completed. Heart disease and dropsy produced by "roughing it" in the bush were the oauees of hie death. Mr Edgecumbe arrived in the colony in 1864, and htfs been employed in fcho Survey Department for 13 years. He made the first eriTvey of the King Country. He was held in high esteem by Percy Smith, and was one of the first Europeans who went through the Urewera country. He waaa brother ofMrG. Edgecumbe, of the " Waikato Timee," and brother-in-law of Mr R. Salmon, of Wakefield-street.
