ARREST OF CAPTAIN HINCKLEY.
Shortly before 2 p.m. to-day, Major Gascoigne, Sheriff of Auckland, accompanied by bis assistant and also by Detectives Kirby and Chrystal, boarded the mail steamer Alamuda as she was about to leave the Queen-street Wharf for San Francisco, and served a writ for the sum of £3,600 on Capt. Hinckley, at the instance of Messrs Wood, Shandon, and Co., of Christchurch, through Messrs Hesketh and Richmond, in connection with the Leading Wind claims. Captain Hinckley, with hie wife, had booked his passage for 'Frisco by the Alam»da, but as he was unable to find securities at such a short notice, he was arrested by the Sheriff and detained. Capt. Hinckley then drove up the wharf again to consult) with his solicitors. Mr J. D. Connolly, United States Consul, who was present with Captain Hinckley, protested against the Sheriffs action in taking an American citizen off an American ship, but his objection was overSubsequently, Captain Hinckley removed bis luggage from the mail steamer.
