SHARE INVESTORS' GUIDE-APRIL 26, 1891.

On the afternoon of the 16th April a war ■ vessel flying the tricolor of "La Etepublique, ,, tho corvutto cruiser Champlain, from Tahiti, arrived in ports, dropping anchor in tho harbour oil tho' Calliope Dock. Sho was signalled about 11 a.m., and was brought into port under slow steam by Pilot Sainty, coming to an anchorage about 1 p.m. Very shortly after anchoring tho warship Hslutcd the port and tho British ilag by firing a salvo of 21 guns, which was responded to by H.M.s _ Cordelia. The Champlain is a substantial-looking barque-rigged iron vessel, of 2.100 tons measurement, with engines of some 500 hor.se power. She does a great deal of her cruisiriK under canvas, and ha* taunt spare, capable of making a large spread of sail. Sho lias a crew of 210 seamen and marinos, and an armament, of ten 14-centknetre guns, find eight Hotchkies machine guns. Sho has come her for docking, sighting, and various repairs.

At ten o'clock a. m. on April 16 the British composite scrow sloop-of-war Goldfinch, 850 tone, Lieut.-Commander Kingemill, left here for Rarotonga direct, on an extended Island cruise. The officers and crew of the Goldfinch havo had a pleasant stay in Auckland, the greater number of the ship's company having hitherto been strangers to New Zealand. She will bo the first British warship to visit tho Horvey Group for a considerable time past. Shoie expected to arrive at Karotonga, tho principal island in the Hervey Group, in about ten dayft* time, and will tliero tako on board Mr F. J. Moss, British Resident at Rarotonga, and proceed with him on a cruise round the other islands of the Group, calling in ab Mangaia, Mauki, Aitutaki, Atiu, Mi tiero, and adjacent islands. After a short stay in the Hervey Group she will shape a course for Fiji, probably calling in at Tonga en route. From Fiji aho will make a cruise to the north-west before going on to Sydney. Mr R. Walrond, private secretary to His Excellency the Governor, left in tho Goldfinich on a pleasure cruise to the Islands.

On April 9 the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's fine new cargo-steamer Maori, 1,756 tons, Captain T. Moflafc, arrived here from London via Melbourne, on her first trip to the part of Auckland. On this trip she left London on February sth, called at Teneriffe, and arrived at Melbourne on the 27th ult., after a stormy trip across the Southern Ocean, 48 days net stoaming from London. She loaded come frozen meat here and went on to Napiar and Waitara to complete for London. Captain Moffat was formerly commander of the K.M.s. Arawa. The Maori took in frozen moat and other cargo before proceeding South to complote her loading.

On November 28th last the Auckland schooner Rainbow sailed from Melbourne for the Clarence River, the vessel having been chartered to convey hardwood from the river for the Melbourne Harbour Board for the improvement of the Yarra. Since the vessel cleared Port Phillip Heads she has neither been seen nor heard of, and the fate of the vessel and crew remained a mystery. The Rainbow was in charge of Captain K. McDonald, well known inAuckland. The vessel being in ballast, the only supposition is thab the ballast shifted and the schooner wenb down without giving the unfortunate crew time to cast the boat adrift or make any effort to concert means to save their lives, This is borne out by a telegram received by the Marino Board from Jervia Bay, to the following effect:— "Captain Brooks, of the schooner Samoa, reports finding a lifobuoy painted white, with the letters ' Rainbow, of Auckland' in black letters, fivo miles east of Beechport Head."
