PRIMITIVE METHODIST SOIREE.
The anniversary soiree of tho Alexandrastroeb Primitive Methodisb Church was held yesterday evening. An excollenb tea was provided in tho school-room, the room being crowded. The tables were attended by Mesdames Mewburn, Saunders, Arraibage, Kerr, Guy, Tarlan, Cox, and Potter, and Misses BlomSeld, Gillespie, and Pobber. After tho tea a public meeting was hold in the church, Dr. Kendordine presiding. Advantago was takon of tho occasion to formally welcome the Rev. J. Guy, who has now been for some weeks in charge of bbc church. Mr Taylor read bhe annual roporb and balanco-eheofc, showing thab the church is in a prosperous condition, bhero being a slighb increase in bhe number of members, and work in all departments is being vigorously pushed forward. Reference was mado to bhe success wibh which tho open-air work is being carried on, and members were urged to attend moro regularly at the morning and Wednesday evening services. Tho balance-sheet showed thab £600 9» 5d had been raised during bhe year, of which £72 3s 2d was raised by bhe ladies ot bhe congregation. The expenditure amounbod to £610 6s 3d, leaving a debit balance of £9 16s lOd. Tho Rev. J. D. Gilmore gave an excollont address, urging tho congregation to rally round thoir minister and work with him, remarking thab some Christians appeared bo take as bheir mobto •Oh to bo Nothing, as thoy were quibe conbenb to bo nobhing, and to do nothing. Appropriate addresses were given by Revs. J. Chew and W. C. Woodward. Mrs Kerr on behalf of the ladies welcomed Mr Guy, and assured him of their hearty support and sympathy. The Rev. J. Guy thanked the friends who had. so kindly assisted him, and urged bhem all bo do their best to advance tho interests of bho church. He deplored the facb thab so much injury was done to church work by travelling evangelists, whosimply unsettled bhe mipds of people and drew them away from the honest solid work of bhe church. In conclusion Mr Guy moved a vote of bhanks bo bhe chairman and to all the trionds who had helped in making the anniversary a success. Appropriate hymns were excellently rendered by an oflicient cheir during the meeting.
