A QUEER REPTILE.

AN animal which appears to be an uncommon, and perhaps hitherto unknown species of the lizard family was shown us to-day by Mr Cornelius Hayes, of Newmarket. A couple of daysago Mr Hayeß was •up in.the Kaipara district, and.while walking across a field in the neighbourhood of Mangawhare, Dargaville, he noticed the creature making its way along in the •scrub. Attracted by its strange appearance, he caught it and placed it in a bottle, in which he has it still alive. It presents a most peculiar appearance, being of a pure yellow colour, about seven inches in length, with irregular white epots on the back and on the tail, which ia that of a lizard. Its head and mouth are much the same as those ot « ordinary lizard, and its fore-feet havea most striking resemblance to human hands „ their shape. The creature, which is a young female, has been ; taken to the Auckland Museum, where some lighti may 'be thrown on its identity with the lizard /species.

A cricket match was arranged to take place to-morrow, St. George's Day, between Gordon and Auckland Cricket Clubs. The match is, however, postponed indefinitely, owing to the inability of some players to get away. The only match on the Domain tomorrow will therefore be that between the South Britiib #ad H«~ Zealand loiurance Companies.
