AN ISLAND WRECK.
TONGAN SCHOONER LOST,
ALL HANDS SUPPOSED DROWNED.
Some time ago ifc was reported thafc fears were entertained at Tonga and Fiji for the safety of the Tongan Government schooner Jiali Tafu, manned by Captain Castles and a native crew, which was musing, being long overdue at Tonga and Fiji.
To-day, news received by the s.s. Taupo from Fiji confirms the worst fears of those interested in the little vessel. A quantity of wreckage has been picked up by the natives on the island of Totoya, one of bhe 4 Fiji Group, whicU unmistnkeably belonged to the Jiali Tafu. The wreckage included the name board of the schooner, which was handed over by the natives a few days ago to Captain Beaumont, of the Northern Steamship Company's inter-island steamer Maori.
The Jiali Tafu left Suva on February 17th last for Tongababu, and has nob been heard of since. Extremely stormy weather prevailed in tho vicinity of the Fijis and Tonga shortly after she left, and ib is surmised that ahe went clown with all hands in a gale. It J8 considered certain that everyone on board was drowned. The schooner was a little fore-and aft rigged crafb. Her master. Captain Castles, was an old and experienced mariner.
