THE EXCURSION TO TE AROHA.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—Would you kindly explain why tho railway authorities charge extra rates for all other stations except those mentioned in tho posters, etc., re holiday excursion train from Auckland to Te Aroha, Cambridge, otc, as.forinstanco, from Auckland to To Aroha, 9s return ; from Pukekohe to To Aroha 15s Ud return, an increase of fare, amounting to Us 9d, and for a thirtyone miles shorter journey. This is, I presume, intended as an inducement to country bumpkins to see the world. Verily, tho ways of officialism are peculiar. To my mind, if tho management wish toinduco country residents to travol, they would do better by charging proportionate rates from tho dilleronb stations. These excursions seem intended for Auckland and suburbs only, and judging from the rates charged from other stations, other folk arc not wanted.—l am, etc., Houxail. [Wo have made inquiries into the apparent injustice to country districts referred to by "Hobnail." It appears thab the excursion on Good Friday to Te Aroha i. run from the large centres only. We are informed that to run excursions from tho country districts whenever excursions are run from Auckland would entail hoavy loss to the Department ; that a short timo since a special trip was run from Pukekohe for To Aroha, and others will probably follow. The regular train services being suspended on Good Friday, tho authorities have arranged that ordinary passengers may travol whorover possible by the special excursion train, so that communication shall not be entirely suspended.—Ed. E.S.]
