NEWTON ELECTORATE.
SIR GEORGE GREY'S NOMINATION
v A POSSIBLE COMPLICATION.
Sir George Grey was yesterday nominated for the Newton seat in the House of Representatives by Messrs S. C. Brown Mayor ■of Newton, and S. J. Ambury, the late JUayor. The nomination paper with the ■deposit required by law was deposited with Mr J. A. Beale, Returning Officer. I hat ■was all plain sailing, and It appeared that Sir George was sure of his election and a •walk over. Bub a rumour is current that the nomination is not regular, and that another gentleman intends to have himself nominated and win the seat through the irregularity. The contention againsb Sir George's nomination is that, being out of the colony, the cable message giving his consent is irregular. The nosition of affairs is ab present a little doubtful. Tho nomination papers are in proper form, bub the consent, in Mr Beale's opinion, is sbill wanting. The only appearance of consent that he has received is a cable message from Sir Georgo in the following words :— " Letter sent ■Consenting nomination for Newton. The Reburning Officer says thab legally there is no consent given by that message. It simply informs him that a letter is cominf. If tho letter arrives all right by the Monowai and is in proper form, all will be well. The nominations closo on Monday in date: but Monday being a public loliday Tuesday becomes the lasb day tor receiving them. If Sir George's letter has not been sent by the Monowai it can hardly by any possibility arrive in time. Mr Beale thinks thab if Sir George had cabled a message in the following words. "I hereby consenb to be nominated for Uewton " it would have been all right.
