FIRES.

On March sth the Canterbury Grass-seed Cleaning Company's workson Norwich Quay were destroyed by fire. The stores were full, and the men were working day and night shifts. It is presumed the tire originated in the engine-house. There was a strong northwest wind blowing ab the time, and the premises of Parsons, sailmaker, adjoining, were saved. The firm's carter was asleep on the premises, and had a narrow escape. He was awakened by the crackling wood. The insurances are :—Stock : £2.250, in'the Victoria and Sun ; plant: £300, in the Liverpool, London, and Globe; valued ab £900. There were 700 bags of seed ready for shipment.

There happened in Dunedin on the nighb of March 11 what proved to be one of tho most extensive fire 3in Dunedin for some time. The fire brigades were a long time in reaching the scene, and the fire had a good hold. It is supposed to have originated in the cellar of Brown's furniture warehouse. The whole of the building, which is of 4>rick, was completely gutted, and so were the adjoining premises, aiso of brick, of Sutton, grocer. Wilson's (confectioner) shop was also gutted. Here the fire was checked. The following are the insurances: , Ball's fruitshop, owned by Pryor, insured for £1,000 in the Victoria ; stock, £1,000 in tho New Zealand ; furniture £100 in the New Zealand. The loss will probably be £250 in all. Sutton's grocer shop, insured for £10 y 000 in the South British; stock, £2,000 in the Guardian j all damaged. Brown's furniture shon, owned by the Equitable Investment, insured for £10,000 in the South Bribish j stock £750 in the South Bribish and £750 in the New Zealand. The stock is a total loss. Wilson's furniture and stock were unin« sured, and the building, owned by Mr Ross, was insured in the Victoria for £800, and ia parbially damaged-
