OBITUARY.

Mr Vosey Hamilton, formerly Parlia montary correspondent for the Lyttelton "Times," ami successively editor of the "Star" and tho Canterbury "Times," died at Christchurch on March 23 of atrophy, at the age of 33 years. Mr Hamilton, who is well known, has been ailing a number of years. He was in Auckland some timo ago for the beneiit of his health.

News lias been received in town here from the Islands, via Sydney, of tho death of a well-known Auckland shipmaster— Captain George Couch, in the South Seas. Captain Couch left horo as masber of tho little schooner Vindex-, tor Suwarrow Island and tho Marshall Group, about a year ago, and the schooner has been trading in the Islands ever since. Very brief news of tho mastor's death is to hand, a cable message from Sydney merely stating bhat Captain Couch was dead. The steamer Archer, Captain Henry, which had just returned to Sydney from an extended Island cruise, brought tho news. Tho schooner is trading in the Marshall Group and vicinity under charter to Messrs Henderson and Macfarlano, of Auckland. Captain Couch was aged about 50 year., and was a very woli-known and experienced shipmaster.' ilo had traded from h ro to tho Islands for many years, having at various times commanded the schoonera Curlew, Lily, Cuttyeark, Floetwing, and was also in the Daisy. Ho leaves a widow in Auckland and a son and daughter.

Mr Richard Tucker, who was ono of Auckland's old identities, who urrivod ab Taranaki in tho ship William Bryan in 1841, and who has been in tho employ of tho Auckland Harbour Board for about a quarter of a century, died on Wednesday, March 4, in his fifty-seventh year.

News has been received of tho death ot Mr Nathan Harker, lato of this city. Mr Darker died suddenly at Bournemouth, England, and ib is presumed his end was accelerated by the fearfully cold weather experienced in England during the winter. Mr Darker was well known and deservedly esteemed both in Victoria and Auckland ; horo ho helped materially to dovolop soveral local industries, and was tho owner of soveral properties in Auckland. ilis geniality endeared him to a largo circle of acquaintances, who will deplore his somewhat untimely death. He purposed returning early to this colony, and has died possessed of some considerable property.

It is wir.h great regret, writes our Helensvillo correspondent, that I havo to announce tho death of Mrs Hand, who passed away at her residence, 'i'o Makiri, on Thursday, March 19th. The deceased lady was tho widow of Mr James Hand, who died about oighbecn months ago, and leaves four children to mourn their loss. Mrs Hand was very widely known in this district, and was greatly respected on account of her kindness of heart, and genuine benevolence of disposition. Sho was but fifty years of ago, but had been confined to bed for sometime with hoartdisoase.from which com, plaint sho died. Tho funeral took placo on Saturday afternoon, and was very largely attended, a great number coming from town and even further, to pay thoir last tribute of resDccb to one whoso kindly disposition had gained tho hearts of all who knew her. The funoral service was conducted by tho Very Roy. Father Paul, V.G., who is an undo of tho deceased.
