TUFTS OF TURF.

Cambria was measured before being shipped to Sydney this week, and his height was found to be 14 hands _ inch. Jas. Kean went over in charge of the little son of Nordenfoldb.

Nominations for the Otahuhu Trotting Club meeting close with Mr C. F. Mark on Friday next. The programme is an attractive one, the leading items being- the Handicap Trot of 60sovs, 3 miles, Handicap Maiden Trot of 40sovs, 2 miles, Pony Cup of 30sovs, 7 furlongs, and Pony Trot of 30sovs, 2 miles. The Oakleigh Handicap is run at Caulfield this afternoon.

| Mr J. Marshall has entered a protest j against the Auckland Racing Club Comi mittee sanctioning raceclubs holding meetI iiisrs on courses belonging to other clubs, j For a long period. Mr Marshall has been ! associated with tho Henderson's Mill Turf I Club, arid because the meeting has this year been shifted to the Avondalo course he has sent in his resignation as a steward. Mr Marshall's letter to the secretary of the Henderson's Mill Club speaks for itsolf :— '•Braemar, Mauku, 19th February, 1891. Dear sir, —I notice that my name is a_-ain included amongst tho stewards of the Henderson's Mill Turf Club ; and further, that this year the Club'a meeting ia to take place on the Avondale Racecourse instead of, as formerly, on their own course at Henderson. . Having been for many years actively associated with the Club, although for the lasb two years nob taking any active part owing to absence, I feel somewhat sorry that I have occasion to ask you to remove my r.ame from the list of stewards. My reason for making such request is that, as I am strongly opposed to more than one racing club holding meetings on the same course, I therefore cannot, in justice to myself, act as a steward at your meeting now that the Club intends using the Avondalo course. In the true interest of racing the Metropolitan Club should have refused this club permission to hold its meeting on the Avondale or any other course but its own (Henderson), and should also treat other 'racing clubs' in the same manner who are similarly situated. It really seems to mo that now tho Henderson's Mill Turf Club is without a course, ib has virtually ceased to exist, and it, together with other 'racing clubs' in the same position, should be numbered with tho past. I should have written to you sooner on this matter, but my absence from town must be my excuse. Again regretting that I am compelled to act as I have done,—l am, etc., Jno. Marshall. Mr Robert Wynyard, Secretary Henderson's Mill Turf Club, Auckland."

Racing must be at a low ebb at Kumara when they ran a iivo shilling totalisator at the recent racos.

Ib is reported from Melbourne that Whakawai has accomplished a very satisfactory Australian Cup gallop at Dowliug Forest, where the horse is located. In Melbourne it is thought probable that Mr F. F. Dakin-will be appointed to the position of handicapper vice Mr E. T. Barnard. Referring to tho veteran V.R.C. weight adjuster, "Asmodcous" writes:— " Owners whose opinions aro of any worth will certainly agree that though at times he may have erred, he never wilfully did any man a wrong, but that, on the contrary, E. T. Barnard may honestly claim to have borne himself sans penr el sans reproche." There is little doing at Ellorslie just now, and the principal trainers are absent at Dunedin and Hawera. Frank McMinamin has charge of Major George's horses, including Tho Workman, who appears in great heart, and has entirely recovered from his indisposition of tbe summer. J. B. Williamspq has Dishonour looking well, but it will probably bo next season before the over-grown Orestes is seen at his best. Ruddy has the plough and tan tracks in splendid order for training purposes.
