SIR WILLIAM FITZHERBERT DEAD.

Wellington, this day. Sir William Fitzheeeekt, X.C.M.0., died at his residence at tiie Lower Hubt at twenty minutes to three on Saturday afternoon. The deceased gentleman, who was in bis 82nd year, suilered from Bright's disease. Sir William Fitzherbert held the degree of Doctor of Medicine, but he never practised in New Zealand, where he has lived (up to 1385) for more than 40 years. He has hold from time to time several high colonial and provincial offices. He has also been SpeakeroftheHousenfßepresentatives and Speaker of theLegislativeCouncil. The latter office he held till his decease. As the Minister in charge of the Treasury he showed large knowledge of finance, and when he was in England in IS6B on a special mission for the purpose of consolidating the public debts of New Zealand, and for the settlement of financial claims and counter claims on the part of the Home country and the colony against each other, he rendered great and good service. Aβ a Speaker of the House of Representatives he proved himself ablo and impartial.
