BITS OF TURF.
Mr Hately's handicap for the Wanganui Cup is not a good one. Crackshob has all tbe best of the weights, and on figures neither Hilda, Cissy nor Strephon can have much show with him, thab is if Mr Butler's colb starts fib and well. When the acceptances appear, a better line can be obtained. The Mauku races are fixed to take place on tbe 24th March. The full programme will appear in nexb Saturday's Stab. The proprietors of the Hobartville (N.S. W.) stud seem to realise the fact bhab a grave error of judgment was displayed when they parted wibh Trenton to Mr VV. R. Wilson. To make amends for bbeir great loss, bhe proprietors have decided nob to submit any of bhe yearling fillies to auction, bub to reserve bhe lob for breeding purposes solely. The big prices bhe sons of Trenton realised at bhe recenb sale no doubb influenced those interested to take this wise step. At the Otorohanga races, Muscatelle won the Hurdle Race, Cracksman being the only other starter. The Maiden Plate fell bo Clipperina, the Otorohanga Cup to Kismet, Lonely and Possum filling the other places. Shannon appropriated bhe Sebtlers' Race, and Probest the Consolation. In the laafc issue of tbe Melbourne " Sportsman " to hand appears a porbraib and biographical sketch of Mr Samuel Hordern, the present owner of Nordenfeldb. The wriber says: *'Mr Samuel Hordern is sole proprietor of bhe business known as Anthony Hordern, Haymarket, Sydney, the largest of its kind south of the line. AH the family have been speculative, the father, among other things, having undertaken the construction of a big trunk line ■of railway in West Australia on consideration of receiving grants of land en route. The subject of this sketch has lately attracted attention by giving 5,600 guineas for the greab sire Nordenfeldb, and purchasing other high-bred youngsters in New Zealand. This, however, was nob his firsb dive inbo the sporting world, for he baa for years dabbled in racing and breeding trotters, carriage horses, etc. He only the other day sold a pair to Governor Jersey, and has some of the besb roadsters in the colony. Possessing an extensive and (beautiful pieco of country ab Bowral, on the main Southern line, he has all the climatic and other conditions necessary to .osbablish the mosb successful stud south of Hue." T~be Henderson's Mill Turf Club hold their Annual Meeting en the Avondale course t. i* year, permission having been granted by fc,lß Auckland Racing. Club. The usual date has been fixed on the 17th March. Kapo, who ran so badly at the Auckland Summer Meeting, has been backed to win the Wanganui Cup.
