THE WRECK OF H.M.S. SERPENT.
FURTHER PARTICULARS,
* NO TIME TO ESCAPE.
London, November 14. Further particulars have been received here concerning the wreck of H.M.s. Serpent on the coast of Spain.
The disaster came upon all on board with awful suddenness, and there was absolutely no time for escape.
It was the middle watch when the ship struck the rocks, the majority of the crew being asleep below.
There was a dense fog at the time.
The inrush of water caused the boilers to explode very shortly after the vessel struck.
There was no time to launch the boats.
The total number of the Serpent's officers and crew was 178 instead of 278 as previously stated, and of these there were only three survivors.
