Mr-'JB. M. Smith addressed the electors last nighb. He said he was opposed to the property tax and favoured a tax on unimproved land, supplemented with as income tax and Customs. % He would settle the land on liberal terms, holding, thab land should ba quickly acquired from the natives, favoured fair trade as againsb protection, and believed in offering bonuses bo encourage local industries. He would support free, secular, and compulsory education up to the Fourth Standard, but reduce bhe cosb of both primary and secondary education. He con« sidered the Railway Commissioners were the best three men in the colony for the position, and considered the Taranaki Harbour should be taken over by .the Government, the same as Greymouth and Wee.port. He favoured Federabion, and believed In Unionism, bub objected te ''strikes.'" '
