ARCHBISHOP REDWOOD.
RETURNED FROM THE ISLANDS.
His Grace Archbishop Redwood, of the Roman Catholic Church in New Zealand, leturned to Auckland this afternoon from his Island trip by the Fiji sfeeatner Omapere from Suva. The Archbishop, it will be remembered, left here a month or so ago by the s.s. Wainui for Futuna Island, near the Friendly Group, for tho purpose of assisting at a celebration in honour of the Roman Catholic martyr, Father Chanel, who was murdered by the Futuna natives in 1811. and who has recently been raised by his church to the honour of beatification. On his way to Futuna the prelate called in the Wainui at Tonga and Samoa, and returned via Fiji. The celebration at Futuna was an impressive and solemn one, and was very largely attended by French priests and prelates from other localities in the Pacific. It was held in tho church which had been builfc on the spot where Father Chanel was killed. The Archbishop, in returning, spent a fortnight in Fiji Hβ leaves here for Wellington shortly.
