"THE SORCERER."
OPENING ON MONDAY.
Mosdat is the eventful night. The result of months of labour, countless rehearsals, and a very considerable expenditure of time, money and tact, the directors of the Auckland Amateur Opera Company fesl prepared to give the public their annual season. They hope, however, not merely to satisfy their friends that they are able to sustain the honours they won in " lolanthe " and the " Pirates," but to eclipse the glories of previous triumphs. The cast they themselves declare to be the strongest yet brought forward. The dramatis persona, ia as follows :—Sir Marmaduke Pointdexfcre, Mr C. Chambers ; Alexis, Mr T. M. Jackson ; Dr. Daly, Mr Percy DufSur ; the Lawyer, Mr' P. C. Hamerton ; John Wellington Wells, Mr Archdale Tayler ; Lady Sangazure, Miss Clara Steele j Aline, Mi3S A. Buckland ; Mrs Partlot, Mrs Clutsam ; Constance, Miss. Lizzie Warren. These names certainly look well. We know they can do woll, and presume they ivill. There is a good deal to be said in the matter of stage business. This is where amateurs usually fail, bub this year a great improvement has been made, we are told. Mr Tayler haa about as good a notion of how things ought to bo done as any man in the colony, and if he has managed to train the choruses to his own satisfaction it will probably show far greater advantage than heretofore. This is what we shall see, however. The dresses are spoken of as being exceptionally fine, and tha name of Mr Thornton in connection with tho scenery holds out bighopes. As for conducting, isnofcHerr Schmitt tilling thab post and do we nob know him of old ? Seats, by the way, are going off with the rapidity of—well cash.
