SLAVIN V. McAULIFFE.
VICTORY FOR THE AUSTRALIAN.
Sydney papers to hand by bhe mail steamer to-day give particulars of the boxing contest between Frank P. Slavin, the Australian, and Joe McAuliffe, the Pacific champion, which took place at the Ormonde Club, London, in the presence of a small number of spectators. The battle was to have taken place on bhe 14th August, but the police put in an appaarance and stopped the contest. The match, howover, came oil lasb week in a fair and square fashion. The men fought for a purse of £1,000 and a diamond belt _ given by a well-known American journal. Slavin beat his opponent in less than two rounds. Tho cabled accounts to the Sydney papers state thab Slavin attemcted to force things from tho jump," bub the Americas, making good use of bis greab reach, and displaying much greater science, kept him at bay for bhe first three minutes, dealing out a lob of terrific punishment, snd when bhey went to their corners ab tho end of the round the betting veered round from 110 to 100 on Slavin to 3 to 1 against him ; bub pulling himself together the Australian broke through tho giant's guard, and getting in on him mixed it so badly that tho prido of California broko ground and ran round the ring, with Slavin in hob pursuit, and three times bo wa3 sent to the floor by terrible right-handers on the neck and face, and at the end of bhe round he was hopelessly whipped, and Slavin was declared the winner. Potor Jackson and Slay-in have been matched bo fighb for £3,000 and tho championship of the world at the Melbourne Club.
