THE MARITIME STRIKE
ANOTHER CREW OUT.
THE S.S. RICHMOND.
THE COAL TRADE,
THE R.M.S. ZEALANDIA.
The only fresh local development of affairs in connection wibh the maritime strike to chronicle to-day is the action of the Maritime Council wibh regard to the . Island steamer Richmond, of Auckland, owned by Messrs Donald and Edenborough. The. Richmond arrived here this morning from her regular trip to Tonga, Samoa, Tahibi, and Rarotonga, and ab eight o'clock a number of Union lumpers were to have started to discharge the vessel's cargo of tropical produce. They were, however, called off work by the local Secretary of the Wharf Labourers' Union, under insbrucbions from the Maritime Council, and accordingly ceased work ab once, jusb after sbarting. The sbeamer has a Union crew on board, and bhe men were sob bo work bo geb ab bhe cargo. The crew, seamen and firemen were also called out by the local eecrebary of the Seamen's Union, and they accordingly gave 24 hours' notice of their intention to strike. They will, mosb probably, come out on Monday morning. They, however, agreed bo discharge the vessel's cargo to-day, in place. of the lumpers. The reason given by the Council for this orocedure is the. potion §i #»?
owners of the Riohmond in supporting the Union Steamship Company, by purchasing coal for their own use and then handing ib over to the Union Company." It is stated that the firm purchased a large quantity of coal, for their own us.c the Unions supposed, and then disposed of it to the Union Steamship Company for the use of the mail steamer. The Sarah Pile incident yesterday is also mentioned, bub it is not considered to bo one of the grounds for the calling out of the Richmond's crew. Messrs Donald and Edenborough say they do not anticipate any great inconvenience from the extension of the strike to their steamer. She is to leave again during next weak for the Islands. The R.M.s. Zealandia, which arrived here from San Francisco this morning, was buaily discharging cargo to-day with nonUnion labour, and also coaling from one of the Union Steamship Company's hulke alongside. She leaves to-morrow morning for Sydney.
