BAKERS' CARTERS.

. A meeting of drivers of bakers' carts was called last night in Robson'e Rooms, by the Executive of the Bakers' and Pastrycooks' Oparatives Union, for the purpose of forming them into a Union. About 40 were present. Mr Clune presided, and briefly explained thab the meeting had been called at the wish of the bakers' carters, as they considered that they were nob sbrong enough to form a separate union, and wished to affiliate wibh the Bakers' and Pastrycooks' Union. Mr Wright said that by doing this they could help one another. Somo masters objected to the wages of the carters being raised. The only thing would be to make a regulated scale, as some small masters could nob afford to keep a man, and musb employ boys to drive. They would take the bakers' carters in as a branch, and could form a committee from amongst themselves to form regulations to work under. Some of the men said that they could nob do their work in ten hours.

Mr Wrighb eaid that could be regulated by themselves.

Mr Cowley said that he was rather surprised when he heard thab they were desirous of affiliating wibh the bakers He for one had nob been consulted. For his own parb he averaged thirteen hours a day, bub he did nob believe thab God meant man to slave like that; ib was slavery. One master said tho previous night thab a good youbhwasof as much valueas a man, bub thab was a mabter of opinion. He thought thab those masters fared the besb who had a bhoroughly reliable man on bhe. cart. He thought it short-sighted for masters, to overwork the man on the carb. He was in the dark as to whence this movement had emanated, still he thought it was time something was done. Mr Cowley asked if that was a fairly representative meeting. . Mr Wrighb replied thab ib certainly was nob, bub they were iorced to have small beginnings.

Mr Cowley said thab ib evidently was nob the unanimous wieh. He would, however, move in order to test the feeling, thab they form themselves into a union, to be affiliabed wibh bhe Bakers' and Pastrycooks' Operatives' Union,

This was seconded by Mr Stephens and adopted unanimously, after which those present gave in their names.
